Classifications of Occupancy Groups Overview

This post concerns the ‘big picture’ of the various types of uses that can be found in buildings. Whereas some buildings may be considered to be single use, such as a business office, there are others which have multiple uses.

The following is the list of uses per CBC 2013 – Section 302:

  • Assembly – All Group ‘A’ category uses
  • Business – All Group ‘B’ category uses
  • Educational – All Group ‘E’ category uses
  • Factory and Industrial – All Group ‘F’ category uses
  • High Hazard – All Group ‘H’ category uses
  • Institutional – All Group ‘I’ category uses
  • Laboratory – All Group ‘L’ category uses
  • Mercantile – All Group ‘M’ category uses
  • Organized Camps – All Group ‘C10’ category uses
  • Research Laboratories – All Group ‘L’ category uses
  • Residential – All Group ‘R’ category uses
  • Storage – All Group ‘S’ category uses
  • Utility and Miscellaneous – All Group ‘U’ category uses
